BMI is a general adult screening measure, not a diagnosis. It may not reflect individual health, age, or body composition.
How to use the BMI
- 1Enter your weight in kilograms.
- 2Enter your height in centimetres.
- 3Select Calculate BMI to see the estimate and its general category.
Formula explained
BMI = weight in kilograms ÷ (height in metres)². The standard adult ranges shown are under 18.5, 18.5–24.9, 25–29.9, and 30 or above.
Example calculation
At 70 kg and 1.75 m tall, BMI = 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) ≈ 22.9.
Frequently asked questions
Is BMI a medical diagnosis?
No. BMI is a broad screening measure and does not diagnose health or account for every individual factor. Ask a qualified health professional for personal advice.
Does the calculator store my measurements?
No. Your measurements are calculated in your browser and are not sent to a server.
Are the categories appropriate for children?
The displayed categories are standard adult ranges. BMI assessment for children and teens uses age- and sex-specific interpretation and should be discussed with a clinician.
